‘Elden Ring’ is Dark Souls IV with a Horse-and I Love It

Just before E3, the biggest gaming announcements event of the year began, a trailer was released for Elden Ring, two years after the initial announcement ‘teaser’ trailer .

The sheer hype for this game is here — myself included. As I write this I can hear the sound of thousands of YouTube videos disecting each frame being uploaded. And after reading comments and seeing some of these videos (shoutout to VaatiVidya, lore master), I have noticed a refrain bubbling up from beneath the swell of cheers and hype and memes:

This is just Dark Souls but with a horse!

And my answer to that is yes. Yes it is. And I love it.

Allow me to explain. If you have a game with a dark, rich atmosphere and deep lore hidden in every item description, and then add an open-world concept with a horse to ride around in, it automatically becomes a good idea. I don’t make the rules, I’m just happy to follow them when it comes to good games.

In all seriousness, I did like what I saw in the trailer; it seems there will be a lot more options when it comes to gameplay. You could encounter a caravan of undead enemies and sneak up on them, or rush them… or just keep riding away, out of sight.

This is a flexibility we’ve not really seen in many others in the series. Most enemies in the other games are confined to their own specific areas, but in Elden Ring it seems that the player will be able to travel to whichever “kingdom” in the world they want.

So if you are bored with fighting the same undead in one kingdom, you could get on your horse and ride to a different one. Maybe this one has harder enemies you aren’t supposed to fight yet — but let’s be real, these games were made to be a challenge and to be challenged themselves.

I for one will be preordering “Dark Souls IV but with a horse” as soon as I can.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, go give it a watch on YouTube!
