“You are not Calsavar,” said the dragon.
Its green eyes narrowed at me, and I felt even smaller next to its massive, towering form.
“Where is Calsavar?” the dragon asked.
“Dead,” I answered.
Smoke trailed from its nostrils; the dragon drew its head closer to me, and I could feel the sheer heat coming from its body. It was like standing right in front of a campfire.
“And he taught you how to summon me?” the dragon said.
I nodded and held out the staff in my hand. The dragon looked at it for a moment, and something yellow flickered inside its green eyes.
“That is Calsavar’s staff,” said the dragon, “he told me he would not pass it on to just anyone.”
“I am Ryn of Lon Tree,” I said, “and in the name of my master Calsavar, I humbly ask you to help me.”
The dragon snorted, and seemed to smirk at me.
“I warned him against naming a successor who would be so… formal,” it said. “Very well, why have you summoned me?”
“Calsavar’s death was no accident; he was killed in cold blood,” I explained, “and there is more – your kind are being hunted now. They knew Calsavar was a friend to the dragons, and now they seek to destroy all remnants of magic in the world.”
The dragon’s eyes burned a much brighter green, and as it growled I saw flames licking at its teeth. Its wings unfurled in a show of fury.
“Then they have made their last mistake,” it said, “Calsavar was more than my friend, he was like one of us. We named him Wingless One – and in taking his life, they have taken one of my own family… but to now threaten the rest of Dragonkind? It is unforgivable.”
“So you’ll help me?” I asked.
“Point me in the direction of these murderers and I will rain down such fire as they have never seen!” the dragon growled, “they will know what it is to be defeated by a true Dragon!”
